ASA Savings and Loans Limited has organized a breast cancer screening exercise for 150 women in Nkurakan, located in the Eastern Region. The initiative was held as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The program specifically targeted women between the ages of 20 and 55, providing them with access to professional medical assessments and vital health information.
A specialist medical team from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital conducted the screenings and led an educational session focused on early detection. Dr. Edwin Essel, the lead physician for the session, emphasized the importance of regular self-examinations as a primary tool for identifying potential issues early. He encouraged participants to report any unusual changes to their breasts to healthcare professionals without delay, noting that early intervention significantly improves treatment outcomes.
Beyond the clinical screenings, the event served as a platform to address and debunk common myths surrounding breast cancer. Dr. Essel clarified misconceptions regarding risks associated with intimate activities, providing evidence-based information to the community. By combining medical check-ups with public education, ASA Savings aims to foster a more informed population and reduce the stigma and fear often associated with the disease. The initiative highlights the ongoing need for community-level health interventions to improve overall public health outcomes in Ghana.
