Accra-Tema Expressway Limited (ATEL) has launched a dedicated website to provide the public with real-time updates and transparency regarding the $338 million Accra-Tema Motorway and Extensions Project. The site, www.atexpresswayltd.com, was unveiled during a media engagement aimed at addressing growing public concerns over construction delays on one of the country's most vital transport corridors. The digital platform is intended to serve as a central hub for information, ensuring that citizens and stakeholders are kept informed about the progress of the modernization effort.
The project, which seeks to upgrade the high-capacity motorway to handle traffic volumes that have long exceeded its original design capacity, is currently seeing significant activity on its first phase. According to Bennett Akantoa of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Section 1 of the reconstruction is 53% complete. Construction is currently underway on several critical components of the corridor, including new bridges and footbridges designed to improve safety and ease the flow of traffic for both motorists and pedestrians.
Addressing the history of the project, ATEL acknowledged that work has faced setbacks since 2019, primarily due to complex financing and procurement challenges. To recover lost time, officials outlined plans for an overlapping construction timeline for the remaining sections. The goal is to complete the entire expansion program within a 48-month window. By providing regular updates through the new website, ATEL aims to rebuild public trust and demonstrate its commitment to delivering modernized infrastructure that meets international standards.
