Black Stars Captain Jordan Ayew and Andre Ayew Among High-Profile Ghanaians Without Clubs as Transfer Window Shuts

Several prominent Ghanaian footballers, including Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew and his brother André Ayew, find themselves as free agents following the closure of the 2026 summer transfer window in major European leagues. Despite their international pedigree, these players were unable to secure new contracts or extensions after their previous deals expired at the conclusion of the 2025/2026 season. The situation highlights a growing trend of veteran Ghanaian stars navigating the uncertainties of the free-agent market as clubs increasingly prioritize younger talent or performance-driven renewals. Jordan Ayew, who recently captained the national team, is currently unattached after his stint with English side Leicester City concluded. Similarly, André Ayew is seeking a new challenge following his departure from the Dutch club NAC Breda. They are joined in the clubless category by several other seasoned Black Stars players, including midfielder Mubarak Wakaso, goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott, defender Joseph Aidoo, and midfielder Majeed Ashimeru. Reports suggest that many of these athletes saw their contracts expire without being offered renewals, with some sources attributing the lack of new deals to performance issues during the previous campaign. Despite the closure of the primary transfer windows in major leagues like England and Germany, there remains a glimmer of hope for these unattached stars. Jordan Ayew has already emerged as a significant transfer target for Cypriot giants APOEL Nicosia, who are reportedly keen on bolstering their attacking options with his experience. Because these players are free agents, they are not strictly bound by the transfer deadline and can be registered by new clubs at any time, provided those clubs have space in their squads and the financial capacity to meet wage demands. Furthermore, while the major markets are closed, several domestic windows, including those in Turkey and Portugal, typically remain open longer, offering additional avenues for these players to secure professional contracts. For the Black Stars coaching staff, the clubless status of such key personnel presents a tactical dilemma ahead of upcoming international fixtures, as match fitness and competitive sharpness are critical for national team selection. The coming weeks will be pivotal as these players and their representatives negotiate to find new homes to keep their professional careers and international prospects alive.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies Face Edo Queens in High-Stakes WAFU Zone B Final for Champions League Ticket

Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies are set to clash with Nigeria’s Edo Queens in the final of the WAFU Zone B qualifiers on Saturday, September 5. The highly anticipated match, taking place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, carries immense weight as the winner will secure the sole ticket for the West African sub-region to participate in the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League finals. Both teams enter the final following dominant semi-final performances that underscored their status as the tournament’s top contenders. Ampem Darkoa booked their place in the final with a convincing 4-1 victory over Benin’s FC Dynamique. The match was headlined by a stellar performance from Milot Pokuaa, who netted two goals and provided an assist to ensure the Ghanaian side maintained control throughout the encounter. Similarly, Edo Queens demonstrated their offensive prowess by thrashing USFA 5-1 in their semi-final fixture. The Nigerian side’s clinical finishing has set the stage for a competitive final between two teams that have consistently found the back of the net throughout the competition. This final serves as a rematch of an earlier group stage encounter, where Ampem Darkoa emerged victorious with a narrow 2-1 win over the Queens. The Ghanaian side has enjoyed a flawless run in the competition so far, winning all four of their matches while scoring 11 goals and conceding only twice. Despite the previous result, Edo Queens have shown significant strength since the group stages, making the upcoming final a wide-open contest between two of the region's most prolific attacking sides. With only one spot available for the continental finals, the pressure is on both sides to deliver in this winner-takes-all scenario. For Ampem Darkoa, a victory would solidify their dominance in West African women’s football and provide another opportunity to represent Ghana on the continental stage. For Edo Queens, it is a chance for redemption and to prove Nigeria's pedigree in the sport. The regional rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria adds an extra layer of intensity to what is expected to be a thrilling conclusion to the WAFU Zone B qualifying tournament.

Simon Adingra Completes Ajax Loan Move with Ambition to Match Mohammed Kudus's Legacy

Ivorian winger Simon Adingra has officially joined Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam on a season-long loan from English side Sunderland. The deal, which aims to bolster Ajax's offensive options, includes a loan fee of approximately €3.8 million and a future purchase option set at roughly €16 million. The 24-year-old attacker arrives in Amsterdam following a previous loan spell at Monaco, seeking more consistent playing time and the opportunity to compete at the highest level of European football. In his inaugural interview with the club, Adingra expressed a strong desire to emulate the success of fellow Right To Dream Academy alumnus Mohammed Kudus. Kudus, who became a fan favorite at the Johan Cruyff Arena before moving to the Premier League, recorded an impressive tally of 27 goals and 12 assists during his tenure with Ajax. Adingra noted that the club's distinctive playing style, which emphasizes wing play and one-on-one situations, perfectly aligns with his personal strengths and attacking instincts. Ajax's technical director, Jordi Cruyff, has publicly endorsed the move, highlighting Adingra’s specific technical attributes as vital for the team’s current strategy. Cruyff pointed to the winger's explosive pace, penetrative dribbling, and resilient mentality as key factors that will enhance the squad's attacking capabilities. The technical leadership views Adingra as a primary solution for reviving the team's offensive prowess through his ability to stretch defenses and create scoring opportunities from wide positions. As Adingra begins his campaign in the Eredivisie, the focus will be on his integration into the squad and his ability to replicate the impact of previous West African stars at the club. The permanent purchase option at the end of the 2026/27 season provides a clear path for the Ivorian to establish himself as a long-term fixture in Amsterdam. For now, the winger remains focused on proving his worth and helping Ajax reclaim its dominance in domestic and continental competitions.

Carlos Queiroz Reverses Resignation to Lead Black Stars into 2027 AFCON Qualifiers Amid Tactical Debate

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially confirmed that Carlos Queiroz will remain as the head coach of the Black Stars, reversing his earlier decision to step down following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician, who steered Ghana to the Round of 32—the nation's first knockout stage appearance since 2010—was initially expected to depart after their elimination by Colombia. However, following successful deliberations between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the veteran coach, Queiroz has been handed a new mandate to lead the national team through the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. The reappointment has sparked a polarized response from the Ghanaian football community and the technical team. Assistant coach John Paintsil has expressed strong support for the decision, noting that he has gained invaluable insights into discipline and tactical strategies under Queiroz's leadership. Conversely, many fans have voiced frustration on social media, with some labeling his defensive approach as "haram football" and calling for a more attacking style. GFA President Kurt Okraku has stepped in to defend the coach, pointedly noting that more expansive styles of play have failed to secure an AFCON title for Ghana in over 40 years, suggesting that Queiroz's pragmatic results justify the continuation of his tenure. As Queiroz prepares for this new chapter, he faces significant selection challenges, most notably concerning the future of captain Jordan Ayew. While Ayew was a pivotal figure in the recent World Cup success, Queiroz must now decide if the veteran remains central to the squad for the 2027 cycle or if a transition to younger talent is necessary. This dilemma is compounded by the pressure to evolve the team's offensive output without sacrificing the defensive structure that defined their recent tournament run. The Black Stars are set to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign later this month, facing a competitive group that includes Ivory Coast, The Gambia, and Somalia. The immediate focus will be on the opening matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia, where Queiroz will be expected to demonstrate both tactical growth and the ability to maintain Ghana's status as a continental powerhouse. The GFA's decision to stick with experience signals a belief that stability is the best path to ending the nation's long-standing continental trophy drought.

Airlink Defends High-Precision Low-Altitude Flyby at South Africa vs New Zealand Rugby Match

Airlink, a prominent South African airline, has officially defended a high-stakes aerial display performed during a high-profile rugby match between South Africa and New Zealand at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium. The maneuver, which involved two aircraft conducting a low-altitude flyby over the packed stadium, captured international attention and sparked a heated debate regarding aviation safety and public spectacle. While the sight of the planes soaring just above the stands electrified many in the crowd, it also drew sharp criticism from observers who questioned the necessity and safety of such a daring stunt in a densely populated environment.\n\nIn a formal statement addressing the controversy, Airlink emphasized that the operation was far from a spontaneous act of bravado. The airline revealed that the flyby—which saw the aircraft descend to within approximately 50 feet of the stadium structure—was the result of meticulous planning and rigorous coordination. According to the company, the stunt was executed by a team of highly experienced pilots following strictly approved safety protocols and regulatory frameworks. Airlink maintained that every aspect of the flight was calculated to ensure the safety of both the spectators on the ground and the crew in the cockpit, asserting that the precision displayed was a testament to the skill of South African aviators.\n\nThe public response to the display has been deeply divided. On one hand, critics labeled the maneuver as reckless, suggesting that the risks associated with such a low-altitude flight over a crowded stadium outweighed the entertainment value. On the other hand, many fans and national commentators celebrated the event as a masterclass in aeronautical precision. For many South Africans, the flyby was a source of profound national pride, echoing the iconic aerial displays that have become a hallmark of the country’s major sporting events.\n\nThis tradition of aerial stunts holds significant cultural weight within South African rugby history, famously dating back to the 1995 Rugby World Cup final when a Boeing 747 performed a low-level pass over Ellis Park. Despite the modern scrutiny regarding safety and environmental impact, these flybys continue to be seen by many as an integral part of the pre-match atmosphere that defines South African sporting identity. As the debate continues, the event highlights the ongoing tension between maintaining long-standing cultural traditions and adhering to contemporary safety expectations in the world of professional sports and aviation.

Barcelona and Arsenal Dominate League Action as Pitso Mosimane Returns to Lead Bafana Bafana

Barcelona and Arsenal claimed decisive victories this week, keeping pace at the top of their respective league tables through standout individual performances. In La Liga, Barcelona delivered a commanding 5-2 victory against Rayo Vallecano, powered by braces from both Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. Despite Rayo Vallecano taking an early lead via Sergio Camello, Barcelona responded forcefully to maintain their perfect start to the season. Meanwhile, in the English Premier League, Bukayo Saka’s clinical finish proved the difference for Arsenal in a hard-fought 1-0 win over Aston Villa. Mikel Arteta’s side showed defensive resilience at Villa Park, surviving a penalty claim that was overturned by VAR and a match where the hosts failed to register a single shot on target. Beyond the match results, significant shifts are occurring in team leadership and player rosters globally. The South African Football Association (SAFA) officially confirmed the reappointment of Pitso Mosimane as the head coach of Bafana Bafana. Returning to the role more than a decade after his first tenure, Mosimane’s appointment on August 8, 2026, is seen as a move to bring veteran experience back to the national team. In the Saudi Pro League, Karim Benzema has officially ended his stint with Al Hilal. The club announced that the French striker’s contract was terminated by mutual agreement after just eight months, bringing an unexpected conclusion to his high-profile move. These developments are accompanied by remarkable personal milestones and historical narratives across the sport. Barcelona’s Raphinha has achieved a feat not seen at the club since Lionel Messi in 2017, netting five goals in the first three games of the season. At the same time, the football community is highlighting the unique career trajectory of Valdas Dambrauskas. The coach, who has now made history in the Champions League, was notably a contestant on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" as a student in 2002, demonstrating a rare rise from a non-professional background to the elite levels of European football coaching. As the football season progresses, the focus shifts to whether the current league leaders can sustain their momentum. Barcelona and Real Madrid currently sit tied at the top of La Liga with nine points each, while Arsenal continues to build rhythm despite grappling with injuries to key personnel. The return of Mosimane to the South African dugout and the sudden free agency of Benzema add further intrigue to the international landscape, as teams and players alike prepare for the high-stakes challenges of the upcoming campaign.

Black Stars Captain Jordan Ayew Faces AFCON Selection Scrutiny as Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare Celebrates World Cup Milestone

The Ghanaian national football team is navigating a period of both celebration and intense scrutiny as players transition from the 2026 FIFA World Cup to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Jordan Ayew, the veteran captain of the Black Stars, has found himself at the center of a national debate following his inclusion in the latest squad. Simultaneously, goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has been making headlines for a festive thanksgiving event held in Osu, where he celebrated the team's recent global campaign and acknowledged the unwavering support of the fans. The controversy surrounding Jordan Ayew stems from his current professional status after the 2025/2026 season. Following Leicester City's relegation from the English Premier League, Ayew’s contract with the club expired, leaving him as a free agent. The decision to call up a 'clubless' player for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers has sparked significant criticism on social media, with fans and pundits questioning whether a player without active competitive football should lead the national side. Despite the backlash, Ayew's supporters argue that his leadership and experience remain indispensable for the team's stability during this transitional phase. In a more celebratory development, Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare hosted a high-profile thanksgiving party on August 30, 2026, at the Oasis venue in Osu. The event was specifically organized to honor the team's efforts during the 2026 World Cup and to show appreciation for the Ghanaian public. The gathering gained significant social media traction after videos surfaced online showing Asare alongside popular actress Sylvia Davis. Asare used the occasion to publicly thank Ghanaians for their support, a gesture that was widely praised for strengthening the bond between the players and the community. As the Black Stars prepare for the upcoming AFCON qualification rounds, the technical team faces the challenge of managing both the celebratory momentum and the performance-based criticisms currently surrounding the squad. While Asare’s event highlights the positive morale within certain segments of the team, the debate over Ayew’s fitness and selection underscores the high expectations placed on the national representatives. Moving forward, the team’s performance in the qualifiers will likely be the ultimate factor in settling the current debates over squad composition and leadership.

National Sports Authority Cites Staffing Shortages as Pitch Quality Concerns Mount Across Ghana

The National Sports Authority (NSA) is facing significant operational hurdles as Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah reveals the organization is "100% understaffed." This admission comes amid increasing public scrutiny over the condition of Ghana's sports infrastructure. Ankrah recently clarified the status of the Accra Sports Stadium, explaining that while the facility itself remains open, the main pitch has been made unavailable to undergo essential maintenance and preparation for upcoming international events. He emphasized that the current workforce is insufficient to meet the heavy operational demands of stadium upkeep, creating a bottleneck for facility management nationwide. The impact of these maintenance challenges is being felt directly on the field. Asante Kotoko head coach Erik Tinkler has been vocal about the poor quality of football pitches in Ghana, arguing that subpar playing surfaces actively undermine the entertainment value of the sport. Tinkler stressed that his criticisms are not excuses for team performance but rather a call for better standards, noting that uneven surfaces and inadequate drainage prevent teams from playing attractive, high-quality football. This sentiment mirrors a broader maintenance crisis in Ghanaian sports, where facilities built at great expense are often left to deteriorate, hindering the development of young talent and threatening the country's ability to host major international competitions. Despite these infrastructural challenges, Ghana continues to see success in the realm of sports administration. The National Paralympic Committee of Ghana (NPC Ghana), led by President Samson Deen, recently celebrated the appointment of Ms. Farida Iddriss as the Secretary-General of Africa Aquatics Zone II. Iddriss, who also serves on the NPC Ghana Governing Board and leads the Para Swimming Association of Ghana, is being hailed as a significant recognition of her contributions to sports development. Her new role is viewed as a victory for women in sports and a testament to the individual expertise present within the Ghanaian sporting system. To bridge the gap between administrative success and physical infrastructure, experts suggest that Ghana must move away from reactive maintenance and toward a sustainable, long-term strategy. While individual appointments like that of Iddriss showcase the talent in sports leadership, the physical environment remains a critical component of sports development. Establishing a robust maintenance culture, supported by adequate staffing and consistent investment, is deemed essential if Ghana is to retain its reputation as a regional sports hub and provide a safe, professional environment for its athletes.

Stephen Appiah Secures Global Ambassador Role as Ghanaian Talents Make Moves Across Europe's Elite Leagues

Ghanaian football legend Stephen Appiah has been appointed as a Global Ambassador for 22Bet, marking a significant milestone for the former Black Stars captain. Appiah, celebrated for leading Ghana to its historic first FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006, joins an elite network of African icons including Emmanuel Adebayor, Victor Wanyama, and Daniel Amokachi. In his new role, Appiah is expected to spearhead campaigns focused on community impact, football development, and the promotion of responsible gambling, leveraging his reputation for leadership and excellence to influence the next generation of athletes and fans. While Appiah cements his legacy off the pitch, current Ghanaian internationals are making significant strides within Europe's top leagues. Midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana has completed a season-long loan move from Atalanta to Sassuolo, with the deal including an option for a permanent purchase at the end of the term. This move represents Sulemana’s fifth Italian club in five years, following spells at Hellas Verona, Cagliari, and Bologna. The 21-year-old midfielder expressed that the move is central to his goal of securing consistent playing time to earn a recall to the Black Stars after missing out on recent World Cup cycles. Spain’s Real Madrid is also intensifying its focus on Ghanaian prospects, both on and off the field. Defender Oscar Naasei recently made a successful debut for Real Madrid Castilla, the club's reserve side, playing the full 90 minutes in a goalless draw against Teruel. His integration into the squad comes as the Spanish giants are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign another Ghanaian youngster, Latif Issman, from CD Logroñés. These moves suggest a strategic interest by the European champions in tapping into Ghana's emerging defensive and midfield talent pools for their developmental ranks. The conversation around West African footballing prowess was further amplified by former Nigerian international Obafemi Martins, who recently made headlines with bold claims about his playing days. Speaking on the Obi One Podcast hosted by former teammate John Obi Mikel, Martins asserted that during his prime, he was faster than modern icons Kylian Mbappe and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as the legendary Thierry Henry. These narratives, ranging from transfer business to historical reflections, underscore the continuous impact and evolving presence of West African talent in the global footballing landscape.

Manchester City Shatters Transfer Record with £125m Enzo Fernandez Deal as Deadline Day Reshapes Premier League

The summer 2026 transfer window reached a fever pitch on September 1, headlined by Manchester City's record-breaking acquisition of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. City reached an agreement for a staggering £125 million fee, matching the British record previously set for Alexander Isak. The 25-year-old Argentine, who joined Chelsea for £107 million in 2023, is set to reunite with manager Enzo Maresca. This blockbuster move marks the second time City has broken its own transfer record this summer, contributing to a historic window where four players moved to Premier League clubs for fees exceeding £100 million. In addition to Fernandez, City finalized a £65 million deal for Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye, securing the Senegalese international after Tottenham's pursuit of the player collapsed. Chelsea's departure lounge was equally busy as the club facilitated several high-profile exits to balance the squad and books. Beyond Fernandez, the Blues accepted offers for Mykhailo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo from Tottenham, with Mudryk moving to north London to play under his former manager, Roberto De Zerbi. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has been offloaded to Italian side Como on a loan deal following a series of high-profile errors, with Chelsea quickly securing Emiliano Martinez as his replacement. To bolster their defensive depth, the club is also working on a late move for Honest Ahanor while continuing discussions on various squad rotations before the midnight deadline. Everton emerged as a significant player in the final hours, reinvesting the funds from the Ndiaye sale into a £40 million deal for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun. The 25-year-old USA international arrives at Goodison Park with a proven track record in Ligue 1, where he scored 31 goals in 91 appearances. The Toffees' search for a forward included a failed attempt to bring back Richarlison from Tottenham; however, negotiations stalled over personal terms, leading the Brazilian to express his disappointment publicly. Everton is further looking to strengthen their midfield with ongoing talks for Hull City's Tim Iroegbunam in a deal valued at approximately £22 million. Across the league and into Europe, other clubs finalized crucial business to conclude their summer campaigns. Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus completed a move to Barcelona for a fee of £8.6 million, marking the Catalan giants' third Premier League signing of the window. Meanwhile, Hull City continued an aggressive recruitment drive, making Ilyas Ansah their 13th signing of the summer in a €15 million deal from Union Berlin. The Tigers are also nearing a £12 million agreement for right-back Brooke Norton-Cuffy from Genoa, while simultaneously pursuing 19-year-old Olympiacos prospect Christos Mouzakitis to finalize their Premier League return squad. As the 2026 summer window closes, the sheer scale of spending reflects an increasingly competitive Premier League landscape. Manchester City’s aggressive reinforcement signals a clear intent to dominate both domestic and European stages, while Chelsea’s massive turnover suggests a fundamental shift in their long-term project. For clubs like Everton and Hull City, these deadline-day investments will be pivotal in determining their trajectory for the remainder of the season. With several world-class talents changing allegiances in the final hours, the tactical map of European football has been significantly redrawn ahead of the autumn fixtures.

The financial support is split into two strategic components: GH10,000 dedicated to long-term football development programs within the municipality and GH2,500 as a direct reward to the team for their achievement on the pitch. The donation aims to bolster the association's capacity to manage local talent while rewarding the hard work of the young athletes. The donation follows an impressive performance by the Ketu South U-17 team, which clinched the championship title after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nkwanta South District in the final match. Held in Ho from August 20 to 23, 2026, the tournament featured competitive youth teams from nine different districts across the region. This victory marks a significant milestone for the municipality, signaling a high standard of youth football and the potential for future professional growth among the players involved. Representing the Member of Parliament during the presentation, her aide, Mr. David Doe, conveyed Ms. Gomashie’s pride in the team’s accomplishment and reiterated her unwavering commitment to nurturing young talent. Mr. Barson Foli, Chairman of the Ketu South Municipal Football Association, expressed profound gratitude for the donation, noting that the funds would be instrumental in improving administrative operations, managing logistics, and enhancing the overall welfare of the players. As the association looks toward the future, the GH10,000 development fund is expected to provide a foundation for scouting and training the next generation of football stars in Ketu South. By addressing immediate logistical challenges and investing in grassroots talent, the donation ensures that the district remains a competitive force in regional youth sports. Concurrently, the financial sector held its own specialized competition with the 2026 Bankers Football Gala. The UMB S.P.E.E.D. UMB officials noted that the win reinforces their broader commitment to national sports, highlighted by their existing three-year partnership with the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The gala served as a critical platform for camaraderie within the banking industry, blending competitive spirit with professional solidarity.
