Corporate Ghana took to the fields and courts this past weekend as two major sporting events, the 2026 JoySports Invitational and the Bankers Football Gala, culminated in high-stakes victories on August 29. At the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Piwak Natural Health emerged as the football champions of the JoySports Invitational, while the Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) S.P.E.E.D. Stars dominated the banking sector at the Bankers Football Gala. These events underscored a growing trend of corporate institutions using competitive sports to foster teamwork, health, and professional networking outside the boardroom.
The JoySports Invitational Tournament brought together 34 companies for a diverse range of activities beyond football, including swimming, table tennis, chess, and athletics. MobileMoney Fintech Limited (MMFL) was among the notable participants, with HR Head Mrs. Dzifa Romana Mensah emphasizing the event's role in strengthening client relationships and employee bonding. The day featured unique highlights such as a CEO penalty shootout and recreational races like sack and lime-and-spoon competitions. Special Guest of Honour and Member of Parliament John Dumelo attended the event, which began with a mass health walk and aerobics to promote physical fitness among Ghana’s workforce.
Concurrently, the financial sector held its own specialized competition with the 2026 Bankers Football Gala. The UMB S.P.E.E.D. Stars lifted the trophy after overcoming challenges from seven other competing banks, a victory the institution attributed to the discipline and resilience central to its corporate culture. UMB officials noted that the win reinforces their broader commitment to national sports, highlighted by their existing three-year partnership with the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The gala served as a critical platform for camaraderie within the banking industry, blending competitive spirit with professional solidarity.
Looking ahead, the focus of the sporting community shifts from corporate fields to the open road with the upcoming 7th edition of PRURide Ghana. Scheduled for September 6, 2026, the elite urban cycling race will take place on the Borteyman Highway, featuring a 112 km male competition and a 67.2 km female race. Sponsored by Prudential Life Insurance Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Cycling Federation, the event aims to elevate the visibility and growth of cycling in the country. Elite participants are required to hold a UCI license, marking the next significant fixture in a busy season dedicated to promoting health and sporting excellence across Ghana.
