A major fire has destroyed the Zeko Genius motor and spare parts depot in Techiman, Bono East Region, leading to the loss of goods worth thousands of cedis. The blaze, which broke out late Thursday night, posed a severe threat to the surrounding commercial area, including a nearby Zen filling station. Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) personnel were deployed to the scene and spent nearly four hours containing the inferno before it could spread to the adjacent fuel pumps.
The firefighting operation was fraught with danger, resulting in the hospitalization of one firefighter due to smoke inhalation. The officer was treated for respiratory distress caused by the thick, toxic smoke emanating from the burning automotive components and tires. Despite these challenges, the fire crews were successful in their strategic intervention to shield the Zen filling station, an outcome that prevented a much larger catastrophe in the heart of the municipality.
Rev. Naomi Ofori-Adubea Sarpong, the Regional Fire Commander, underscored the importance of early detection and reporting in fire management following the incident. She noted that while the GNFS responded as quickly as possible, the speed at which the fire consumed the depot's contents highlights the need for immediate alerts. Commander Sarpong cautioned that any delay in contacting emergency services significantly reduces the chances of salvaging property and puts both lives and livelihoods at greater risk.
Official investigations into the cause of the fire have commenced, with fire experts currently examining the site for clues regarding the origin of the blaze. At present, the management of Zeko Genius is evaluating the total financial impact of the destruction, which has left the company’s inventory completely razed. The incident has prompted calls for enhanced fire safety protocols within commercial hubs across the Bono East Region to mitigate the risk of similar occurrences in the future.
