The Ghana Prisons Service has launched a formal investigation into allegations of a plot by inmates to poison Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The politician, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently in custody serving a 20-year sentence for unauthorized mining activities. The Prisons Service confirmed the probe following reports from Wontumi’s camp, emphasizing that the safety of all individuals in their care remains a primary concern.
The investigation was triggered by a report from Wontumi’s aide, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, who visited the facility and relayed information that a poisoning plan had been overheard by an individual within the prison. Superintendent Abdul Latif Adamu, the Chief Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, stated that the service is treating the matter with the necessary seriousness to uncover the facts. He reassured the public that Chairman Wontumi is safe, in good condition, and that security protocols are being strictly maintained.
While some reports claimed that five inmates at Nsawam Prison had been relocated to different cells after the alleged plot was discovered, the Prisons Service has officially disputed these accounts. CSP Abdul Latif clarified that there has been no confirmation of inmate transfers related to this specific incident. He noted that such occurrences are rare within the correctional system and urged the public to wait for the official results of the inquiry rather than relying on unverified claims of cell reassignments.
The Ghana Prisons Service has committed to making the findings of the investigation public once the process is concluded to ensure transparency and accountability. The outcome of the probe is expected to address the specific allegations raised by Wontumi’s aide and provide clarity on the security measures in place for high-profile inmates. For now, the service maintains that the environment remains secure and that they will hold any responsible parties accountable should the allegations be proven true.
