Ghanaian entertainment executive Bullgod has called for the introduction of conjugal rights for prisoners and urged former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to use his personal resources to decongest the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. The proposal follows Chairman Wontumi's 100 days in custody, after being remanded on 20 July 2026, which prompted the politician to advocate for a series of reforms within the Ghana Prisons Service.
Bullgod argued that while imprisonment removes an individual's liberty, it should not strip them of their humanity or their natural need for intimacy. He suggested that allowing inmates access to conjugal visits would address their emotional and physical needs, even suggesting that services could be arranged for unmarried prisoners to prevent adverse outcomes such as same-sex relationships within the facilities. While acknowledging that such changes would require parliamentary action, Bullgod emphasized that "sex is nature's call" and must be addressed as part of a modern rehabilitation system.
Addressing the severe overcrowding at Nsawam Prison, Bullgod challenged Chairman Wontumi to take immediate action rather than waiting for government intervention. He highlighted that the facility currently houses nearly 4,000 inmates despite having a design capacity of only 800. Bullgod urged Wontumi to establish local initiatives, such as prison farms, using his own wealth to improve the welfare of those still behind bars. He noted that such direct investment could provide immediate relief to the infrastructure strain currently facing the service.
These comments come in support of a broader 12-point reform plan proposed by Wontumi through his spokesperson, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah. The politician’s proposals focus on improving the salaries, housing, and working conditions of prison officers, alongside better healthcare and family visitation rights for inmates. While both figures agree on the urgent need for modernization, Bullgod’s calls for private-sector-led decongestion and the recognition of sexual rights represent a more radical shift in the national conversation regarding prison reform.
