The University of Gold Coast has officially launched the Gold Coast Society of Doctoral Fellows, a new initiative designed to foster research collaboration and provide a robust support network for scholars focused on Ghana’s national development. The launch took place during a ceremony where 105 students were matriculated into the university’s first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Administration program. This academic milestone is intended to bridge the gap between advanced scholarly research and the practical solutions required to address the country's pressing socio-economic challenges.
Speaking at the event, the Chancellor of the University, Bishop Dr. Gideon Titi-Offei, emphasized the critical role of higher education in shaping the nation’s future. He argued that Ghana’s true potential lies in its intellectual resources rather than its natural wealth, urging the new doctoral candidates to focus on human capital development. Dr. Titi-Offei challenged the students to apply their academic findings to real-world problems, framing their pursuit of higher degrees as a commitment to national advancement and service beyond mere theoretical achievement.
The newly introduced PhD in Business Administration is a three-year program offering five specialized tracks. It aims to equip graduates with the sophisticated analytical and leadership skills necessary to navigate complex organizational and economic issues. By integrating these students into the Society of Doctoral Fellows, the university plans to create a sustainable academic ecosystem where researchers can collaborate across various disciplines and share insights that could influence both public policy and private sector growth.
As the first cohort of 105 students begins their studies, the University of Gold Coast envisions the Society of Doctoral Fellows as a permanent fixture in its research infrastructure. This move aligns with broader national goals to increase the volume of locally relevant research and strengthen the capacity of Ghanaian institutions to produce top-tier intellectual leadership. The university's expansion into doctoral education marks a significant step in its mission to contribute to the long-term intellectual and professional capacity of the nation.
