The University for Development Studies (UDS) has entered into a strategic collaboration with academic institutions across Africa and Europe to develop specialized postgraduate programmes in waste management. Supported by the European Union (EU) through the WARM Project, this initiative aims to address West Africa's environmental challenges by training experts in technical waste solutions. Ten partner institutions are contributing to the project, which emphasizes practical skills for waste reduction and recycling.
The curriculum development was advanced during a four-day workshop in Tamale from October 5 to 8, 2026. This session focused on creating a Master of Science (MSc) curriculum that bridges the gap between academic theory and the practical needs of the waste management industry. To support this hands-on approach, the project includes the installation of new laboratory equipment and enhanced training methods, ensuring that students are prepared for real-world technical challenges.
As part of the design process, participants conducted field observations of waste management practices in the Tamale metropolis. This allowed the partnering institutions to align the curriculum with local realities while integrating international best practices. By focusing on innovative recycling technologies and sustainable resource management, UDS and its partners aim to significantly improve environmental outcomes and educational standards across the sub-region.
