An unidentified woman was killed on Tuesday evening after being struck by a passenger train on the Tema-Afienya railway line. The fatal incident occurred around 7:00 pm at Mataheko-Sebrepo, specifically near Gate 2 of the EMEF Estate in the Tema area. The woman was hit while the train was conducting its regular evening shuttle service from the Tema Harbour Station to its final stop in Afienya.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing the train’s horn sounding several times shortly before the impact, but the collision could not be avoided. The force of the strike left the woman’s body severely mutilated. Following the accident, local residents made multiple calls for emergency assistance. When help did not immediately arrive, community members reportedly took steps to preserve the remains until police officers eventually arrived at the scene to retrieve the body and initiate official investigations.
The tragedy has reignited long-standing safety concerns among residents living along the railway corridor. Community members in Mataheko-Sebrepo are renewing their urgent demands for the construction of a footbridge to provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians. Residents emphasized that without a dedicated pedestrian bridge, they are forced to cross the tracks directly, posing a constant risk of fatal accidents in the busy residential area near Community 25.
As of the latest reports, the identity of the deceased remains unknown, and the police are continuing their efforts to identify her and investigate the circumstances of the crash. This accident highlights the ongoing challenges of ensuring pedestrian safety as Ghana expands its railway infrastructure through densely populated suburban communities.
