Titus Glover, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on traditional authorities in the Greater Accra Region to advocate for traders whose stalls were recently demolished at La Pleasure Beach. Speaking during an interview on Citi FM on October 29, 2026, Glover expressed disappointment over the perceived silence of Ga chiefs following the enforcement action. The demolition, carried out by National Security operatives, has sparked significant concern regarding the economic stability of the local community.
The clearing of the beachfront was reportedly initiated at the behest of the Labadi Beach Hotel, leading to the destruction of several structures used by local vendors. Glover emphasized that these traders rely on their stalls for their daily sustenance and that such drastic measures require a stronger response from traditional leadership. He noted that the role of a chief extends beyond ceremonial duties and must include the active protection of the livelihoods of their subjects, especially when faced with institutional pressures or state-led enforcement.
In his critique, Glover drew a direct comparison to the Ashanti Region, noting that the Asantehene and his sub-chiefs are deeply involved in matters affecting their people's welfare. He argued that in other jurisdictions, authorities would likely engage with traditional leaders before carrying out such widespread demolitions. By contrast, he suggested that the apparent lack of intervention by Ga traditional authorities leaves the youth and small business owners feeling abandoned by their primary guardians.
The call for action highlights the ongoing tension between commercial expansion and the rights of informal sector workers in Ghana’s capital. As the traders at La Pleasure Beach grapple with the loss of their assets, Glover’s statements underscore a growing demand for traditional rulers to exert their influence in modern governance and land administration. The outcome of this appeal remains to be seen as the Greater Accra traditional council considers its position on the matter.
