Basic schools in the Tatale-Sanguli District are grappling with a severe shortage of educators, with the pupil-teacher ratio reaching an alarming 94:1. This figure far exceeds national standards and is significantly undermining the quality of education for children in the area. Local officials and school heads report that the lack of personnel has forced the few remaining teachers to take on unsustainable workloads, often overseeing multiple grade levels simultaneously to ensure that classrooms do not remain completely unsupervised.
The crisis is particularly evident at Nkpani D/A Primary School, where only two teachers are responsible for seven different classes. Similarly, Kandin R/C Junior High School operates with just three teachers tasked with instruction for over 100 students across ten different subjects. These conditions have created an environment where individual student attention is nearly impossible, as educators struggle to cover the curriculum while managing overcrowded and multi-grade classrooms.
Efforts to address the gap through centralized recruitment have so far proven insufficient. Local education authorities highlighted that only 16 new teachers were recently allocated to the entire district, a number that fails to meet the basic needs of the local school system. The difficulty in attracting staff to these underserved rural areas remains a primary hurdle, as many newly posted teachers seek transfers or fail to report to their stations due to the challenging living conditions and remote nature of the district.
While the government has announced a 20% incentive for teachers working in rural areas, experts and local stakeholders argue that financial bonuses alone are not enough to solve the retention crisis. There are urgent calls for a decentralized recruitment strategy that prioritizes local candidates who are more likely to remain in the district long-term. Additionally, school heads are advocating for more comprehensive support measures, including the provision of decent accommodation and reliable transportation, to make teaching in the Tatale-Sanguli District a viable and sustainable career choice.
