Godwin Kudzo Edudzi Tameklo, the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has called on African nations to harmonise their oil and gas regulations to foster a more integrated and efficient energy market. Speaking at a panel session during the 20th OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week held in Lagos, Nigeria, Tameklo emphasised that regulatory convergence is essential for the continent to attract significant investment and achieve sustainable growth in the downstream sector. He noted that unified frameworks are necessary to position Africa’s energy sector for long-term global competitiveness.
The NPA boss highlighted that shared standards and unified frameworks would significantly reduce the continent's heavy reliance on fuel imports. He advocated for strategic investments in refining infrastructure and the adoption of modern technology to enhance domestic production capacity. By aligning regulatory requirements, Tameklo argued, African countries can create a more predictable and attractive environment for international and local investors, ultimately lowering the cost of doing business across borders and improving energy security.
To achieve these goals, Tameklo stressed the need for stronger collaboration between regional regulators and industry stakeholders. He noted that such partnerships are critical for promoting regional integration and ensuring that the African energy sector operates under cohesive standards. This call for harmonisation aligns with broader continental efforts to streamline trade and infrastructure development, aiming to ensure that African nations can leverage their collective resources for more stable economic growth.
