Godwin Kudzo Edudzi Tameklo, the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has called for the harmonization of oil and gas regulations across the African continent to stimulate investment and improve market efficiency. Speaking at the 20th OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week in Lagos, Nigeria, Tameklo emphasized that regulatory convergence is a critical prerequisite for the sustainable growth of Africa's energy sector. He argued that a unified regulatory framework would provide the clarity and stability necessary to boost investor confidence across various regional markets.
During a panel discussion on regulatory convergence, the NPA boss highlighted the urgent need for strategic investments in refining infrastructure and advanced technology. He pointed out that by enhancing domestic refining capacity, African nations could significantly reduce their heavy reliance on imported petroleum products. This shift, according to Tameklo, would not only retain more value within the continent but also insulate local economies from the volatility of global supply chains and price fluctuations.
Tameklo further stressed the importance of collaboration between regulators and industry stakeholders to establish shared standards. He noted that regional integration is essential for creating a competitive energy market that can compete on a global scale. By aligning technical and commercial standards, African countries can facilitate smoother cross-border trade and encourage the development of shared infrastructure, such as pipelines and storage facilities.
The call for convergence comes as African nations seek to maximize the benefits of their natural resources under the broader framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Tameklo concluded by positioning regional integration and harmonized standards as the foundation for the long-term success of the continent's downstream energy sector. The OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week continues to serve as a primary platform for industry leaders to address these systemic challenges and chart a path toward energy security for the continent.
