The Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has announced government plans to establish a new digital fraud monitoring system. Speaking at the CyberSecure Ghana International Conference 2026, the Deputy Minister emphasized that the initiative is a critical step in the nation’s ongoing efforts to enhance cybersecurity and safeguard the digital economy. The proposed system is designed to track and mitigate fraudulent activities in real-time, providing a layer of protection for both institutional infrastructure and individual users.
The announcement comes against a backdrop of rising cyber threats in the country. According to Sukparu, Ghana has recorded 4,938 cybersecurity incidents so far this year, resulting in substantial financial losses estimated at GH₵209.7 million. The Deputy Minister noted that these figures highlight the urgent need for a more proactive approach to digital security, as the integrity of financial systems and public trust are essential for the growth of the digital marketplace.
In addition to the new monitoring system, the Ministry is rolling out several complementary initiatives aimed at fortifying Ghana's cyber defenses. These include mandatory vulnerability assessments for critical national infrastructure and a new licensing framework for cybersecurity service providers to ensure professional standards across the industry. Sukparu also highlighted the importance of human capital development, noting that the government is prioritizing specialized training for young people to build a resilient local talent pool capable of addressing evolving digital threats.
Concluding his remarks, the Deputy Minister called for a unified front against cybercrime, urging a deeper collaboration between the government, private sector players, and the general public. He stressed that while the state is investing in technology and regulation, citizens must also remain vigilant and informed. By fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness, Ghana aims to create a secure environment that encourages investment and innovation in its burgeoning digital sectors.
