At least 82 people have been confirmed dead and dozens more remain missing following a catastrophic structural failure at the al-Zara gold mine in Sudan's West Kordofan province. The collapse, which began on Sunday near the town of Nuhud, involved several interconnected shafts, trapping an unknown number of miners deep underground. While rescue teams and fellow miners have worked tirelessly through the night, the death toll has continued to rise, with 60 bodies recovered initially followed by another 22 in subsequent searches. Approximately 50 individuals are reported injured as the search for survivors continues under increasingly dire conditions.
The rescue operation has been severely crippled by a chronic lack of heavy machinery and essential equipment. Reports from the site indicate that workers are primarily using basic tools and human strength to dig through the rubble, with only a single forklift available to assist in the massive excavation effort. Survivors and local community members have criticized the complete absence of safety measures and the lack of emergency response infrastructure at the informal mining site. These conditions are representative of the broader hazards in Sudan's unregulated mining sector, which remains a vital but dangerous economic lifeline for thousands of civilians.
Compounding the tragedy is the ongoing civil war between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the latter of which controls the area where the disaster occurred. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has not only diverted resources away from industrial safety and regulation but has also made it nearly impossible for humanitarian aid and specialized rescue equipment to reach remote regions like West Kordofan. As gold mining becomes increasingly central to financing the war effort, experts warn that the pressure to extract the precious metal will continue to lead to corners being cut on worker safety, likely resulting in more preventable tragedies in the future.
