Stephen Ofosu Agyare, the suspended Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East constituency, has directed his supporters to immediately cease all campaigning for him to contest the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries. The directive aims to quell growing internal pressure from his base and redirect focus toward party cohesion. Agyare expressed his gratitude to those who have remained loyal to his leadership but insisted that personal ambitions must not compromise the party's stability.
The call for him to run gained momentum following recent constituency executive elections, where several candidates identified as Agyare's allies secured key leadership positions. This success emboldened his supporters to advocate for his transition from party administration to a parliamentary role. However, Agyare’s statement clarified that he would not be pursuing the seat, choosing instead to prioritize the rebuilding of the constituency branch after a period of internal friction.
Agyare’s political standing has been a point of contention since his suspension in June 2026, a disciplinary action that prevented him from seeking a third consecutive term as constituency chairman. The suspension triggered significant tensions within the local party structure. By formally declining the push for a parliamentary bid, Agyare indicated a clear intention to move past these divisions and foster a more unified environment for the newly elected executive body.
In his appeal for unity, the suspended chairman specifically urged his followers to throw their full weight behind the incumbent Member of Parliament, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, and the new leadership team. He emphasized that the interests of the NDC in Awutu Senya East must take precedence over individual aspirations, stressing that the party needs a unified front to remain competitive. This move is seen as a crucial step in stabilizing the constituency as the party prepares for its next series of electoral challenges.
