The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially dismissed rumors of a planned reshuffle within its Minority Caucus leadership in Parliament. General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong stated during a press conference that the party is fully satisfied with the performance of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, who currently serves as Minority Leader. The party leadership emphasized that no discussions regarding a change in leadership have taken place, labeling the reports as baseless speculation intended to create internal division.
Kodua Frimpong cautioned party members to disregard the rumors, which he suggested were designed to sow discord among the parliamentary ranks. He affirmed the party's commitment to the current leadership team as they coordinate their legislative strategy under the administration of President John Mahama. Beyond the parliamentary leadership, the General Secretary also addressed unauthorized social media campaigns for the 2028 running mate position, reminding members that the selection process is governed by the party's constitution and determined by the flagbearer alongside the National Council.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has challenged the NPP's official denial, with NDC member Rashid Tanko Computer describing the party's response as "firefighting." The NDC claimed that internal discussions about removing Afenyo-Markin have been active since the 2024 general elections, allegedly driven by tensions following the NPP's presidential primaries and the Minority Leader's electoral performance. Tanko suggested that the NPP is facing internal pressure despite their public displays of unity.
In response to these allegations, the NPP maintains that it remains focused and united in its role as the primary opposition. The party has urged its supporters to ignore external narratives and focus on the party's long-term objectives. As the legislative session continues, Afenyo-Markin remains at the helm of the Minority Caucus, with the full backing of the party's national executive body.
