The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has reaffirmed the commitment of President John Mahama’s administration to eliminate cybercrime in Ghana. This declaration follows a series of successful sting operations conducted by the Cybersecurity Authority in collaboration with international and local law enforcement agencies. These coordinated efforts resulted in the arrest of more than 130 suspects linked to organized cyber-fraud networks that have caused extensive financial damage internationally.
The operations were carried out between September 25 and September 28, involving a high level of cooperation with the United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA). According to reports from the FBI, the criminal activities targeted in these raids are responsible for nearly $10 million in financial losses. The crackdown focused on dismantling syndicates involved in sophisticated scams that exploit digital platforms to defraud individuals and organizations across international borders.
Minister Samuel Nartey George highlighted that ensuring a secure digital environment is a top priority for the current administration. By working closely with global security partners, the government aims to demonstrate that Ghana is no longer a safe haven for cybercriminals. The Minister noted that the success of these operations is a testament to the effectiveness of the Cybersecurity Authority and the strategic importance of international intelligence sharing in the modern era of digital threats.
Looking forward, the Ministry intends to provide additional support to law enforcement agencies to maintain this momentum. The government plans to invest in advanced surveillance technology and specialized training for officers to stay ahead of evolving cyber-threats. Samuel Nartey George reiterated that the Mahama administration would maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward digital fraud, seeking to protect the integrity of Ghana's financial systems and foster a safer online environment for all users.
