The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has declared the government's unwavering commitment to eradicating cybercrime in Ghana. Speaking in the wake of a significant law enforcement breakthrough, the Minister emphasised that President John Mahama's administration is dedicated to ensuring a secure digital landscape for all citizens. This declaration follows a series of successful sting operations that led to the apprehension of more than 130 suspects allegedly involved in various cyber-related offences across the country.
The coordinated crackdown, which took place between September 25 and 28, was led by the Cybersecurity Authority in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service. Crucially, the operations involved significant international cooperation from the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). According to reports from the FBI, the fraudulent activities targeted during these raids are linked to global losses totaling nearly $10 million, highlighting the severe economic impact of cyber-enabled crimes on victims.
Minister George noted that these arrests represent a vital milestone in the national strategy to protect Ghana’s burgeoning digital economy and its international reputation. He indicated that the government plans to further intensify its collaboration with both local and international law enforcement agencies to track down and prosecute sophisticated criminal syndicates. By strengthening these partnerships and leveraging advanced digital forensics, the administration aims to dismantle criminal networks and restore full confidence in the nation's digital infrastructure and financial systems.
