The Rotary Club of Tamale has conducted a health screening exercise for 168 girls at Our Lady of Fatima R/C Junior High School (JHS) as part of its activities to mark breast cancer awareness month. The initiative, held on October 23, 2026, aimed to educate the youth on the importance of early detection and proactive health management under the theme ‐Early Action, Better Outcomes.‑ The program combined medical assessments with a broader educational drive to ensure that students and community members are better informed about the disease.
Beyond the clinical screenings, the initiative reached a significant number of people through its awareness-building efforts. A total of 318 students and 201 members of the surrounding community participated in the educational sessions, which focused on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and the necessity of regular self-examinations. During the medical assessments of the 168 girls, health professionals identified two cases that required further clinical attention. Although these specific cases did not involve the presence of breast lumps, the individuals were referred for additional evaluation to ensure their continued well-being.
This screening drive is an annual project for the Rotary Club of Tamale, reflecting its broader commitment to enhancing community health and empowering women and youth in the region. By targeting students at the junior high school level, the club seeks to instill health-conscious habits early in life. The club has urged the general public to prioritize regular check-ups and to seek immediate medical advice if they notice any abnormalities, emphasizing that early detection remains the most effective tool in improving health outcomes in the fight against breast cancer.
