Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, the Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has officially dismissed suggestions that the Accra Sports Stadium should be demolished. Addressing persistent concerns regarding the facility's structural integrity, Prof. Sarpong clarified that the authority is prioritizing comprehensive renovations to resolve existing engineering issues rather than opting for a total teardown of the historic venue. This stance comes at a critical time as the stadium continues to serve as a primary hub for both national and international sporting activities in Ghana.
The debate surrounding the stadium's future was recently intensified by safety concerns highlighted by the former NSA Board Chairman, Prof. Fred Awaah. While the NSA acknowledges that the stadium faces genuine engineering challenges, Prof. Sarpong emphasized a pragmatic approach to management. He noted that the authority intends to gradually address the facility's deficiencies through targeted repairs and maintenance cycles. This strategy aims to balance the need for safety improvements with the practical reality of maintaining an active venue for Ghana's busy athletic schedule.
The stadium's continued operations are evidenced by its recent hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Ghana and Gambia. Looking ahead, the NSA is preparing the facility to host several upcoming fixtures, including a highly anticipated doubleheader against Somalia. By ruling out demolition, the NSA seeks to provide stability and reassurance to stakeholders and fans that the Accra Sports Stadium will remain a functional cornerstone of the nation’s sports infrastructure while the necessary engineering fixes are implemented.
