Former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has clarified that while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is open to receiving Alan Kyerematen back into its fold, the former Trade Minister cannot lead the party in the 2028 general elections. Osei-Owusu emphasized that the party has already completed its internal selection processes, resulting in the election of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP flagbearer for the upcoming contest. He noted that the party's democratic decisions must be respected by all members and returning figures.
The remarks come amid discussions regarding Kyerematen's potential return to the party he exited in September 2023. At the time of his departure, Kyerematen cited alleged unfair treatment and intimidation of his supporters during the NPP's presidential primaries. He subsequently contested the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate under the Movement for Change banner. Osei-Owusu indicated that while Kyerematen's past contributions to the party are acknowledged and his return as an ordinary member would be welcomed, the party will not entertain requests for him to jump to the top of the ticket.
Osei-Owusu further explained that the NPP operates under established constitutional procedures that must be adhered to regardless of an individual's status. He pointed out that the mandate to lead the party in 2028 has already been handed to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia through a formal process. Any attempt to bypass these outcomes would undermine the party's internal structure. He stressed that Kyerematen, like any other returning member, would be expected to contribute to the party's efforts without expecting an immediate promotion to a leadership role that is already filled.
As the NPP prepares for the 2028 electoral cycle, the focus remains on consolidating party unity behind Dr. Bawumia's candidacy. The party leadership continues to navigate the aftermath of the previous elections, seeking to reconcile with former members while maintaining the integrity of its internal democratic choices. For now, the path for Kyerematen to return to the NPP remains open, but his role would be that of a member rather than a presidential candidate.
