Constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Afigya Sekyere East have formally apologised to the Agona Traditional Council following a protocol error in a recent invitation letter. The apology was triggered by the party addressing the Omanhene of Agona simply as 'Chief' instead of his rightful title, 'Paramount Chief'. This clerical oversight was interpreted as an act of disrespect by the traditional authority, leading to a temporary ban on the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mavis Nkansah-Boadu, from organising local events.
The tension between the political leadership and the traditional council threatened to disrupt community initiatives, including a high-profile football tournament designed to promote youth development. The council’s decision to restrict the MP's activities within the Agona jurisdiction highlighted the sensitivity of traditional titles and the importance of adhering to customary protocols in official communications. The NPP executives acted quickly to address the grievance to ensure that the relationship between the party and the traditional rulers was not permanently damaged.
In their formal statement, the NPP executives defended Mavis Nkansah-Boadu, asserting that the MP has always held the highest regard for the Agona stool and the Traditional Council. They clarified that the error was an administrative mistake rather than a deliberate attempt to undermine the Paramount Chief's authority. The leadership emphasised that the MP remains committed to the area’s progress and values the partnership between her office and the traditional leadership as a cornerstone for local development.
The resolution of this standoff is expected to pave the way for the resumption of the MP’s social programmes, particularly the football tournament which serves as a key platform for youth engagement in the constituency. By issuing the apology, the NPP aims to restore harmony and ensure that political and traditional institutions can continue to work together for the benefit of the Afigya Sekyere East district. The party has pledged to exercise greater diligence in future correspondence to prevent similar protocol breaches.
