Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, has announced plans for a new bilateral trade agreement between Ghana and Burkina Faso to strengthen industrial cooperation. Speaking at the 18th International Arts and Crafts Fair (SIAO 2026) in Ouagadougou, the Minister highlighted that annual trade between the two West African nations already exceeds $1 billion. The proposed pact seeks to build on this foundation by formalizing collaboration in key economic sectors and streamlining cross-border commercial activities.
The Minister emphasized that the agreement will specifically target sectors such as handicrafts, agro-processing, and agricultural value chains. By focusing on these areas, both nations aim to create more business opportunities and enhance the commercial viability of locally produced goods. A significant component of the proposal involves harmonizing product standards and improving border management systems to reduce friction for traders. Ofosu-Adjare noted that these technical improvements are essential for fostering a more integrated and efficient regional market.
During the fair, where Ghana joined Mali and Niger in showcasing products from across its 16 regions, the Minister advocated for the transformation of traditional crafts into export-ready products. She encouraged artisans to implement better processing and distribution systems to reach international markets effectively. Beyond the economic figures, the Minister also conveyed fraternal greetings from President John Mahama to the leadership of Burkina Faso, underlining the diplomatic importance of these growing trade ties.
The proposed deal represents a strategic effort to deepen economic integration within the sub-region. By valuing African-made crafts and ensuring fair pricing, the Minister believes both countries can take greater pride in their unique products while driving industrial growth. The next steps involve ongoing negotiations to finalize the terms of the agreement, which officials hope will provide a structured framework for a sustainable, long-term economic partnership between Accra and Ouagadougou.
