The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially launched a critical internal restructuring process as it prepares to challenge President John Mahama’s administration in the 2028 general elections. Following the party’s defeat in 2024, which saw significant parliamentary losses in regions like Greater Accra, the NPP opened nominations for national executive positions in August 2026, with elections scheduled for October 3. A recent Global InfoAnalytics poll indicates that former General Secretary John Boadu is currently the frontrunner for the National Chairmanship with 27% support, though a substantial 47% of voters remain undecided. Other prominent contenders include Boakye Agyarko, who recently secured the endorsement of the Eastern Regional TESCON, and former Chairman Paul Afoko. Nomination fees for the top post have been set at GH"50,000, with vetting slated to take place between August 31 and September 3.
Regional dynamics are proving pivotal in this rebuilding phase, particularly in the party’s strongholds. In the Ashanti Region, the growing influence of MP Dr. Ayew Afriye was confirmed after his faction secured eight out of eleven regional executive positions. Ashanti Regional Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah has urged constituency leaders to prioritize collaboration and strict adherence to the party constitution to prevent internal friction. This call for cohesion was echoed by the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, during a meeting with newly elected Central Regional executives. Bawumia emphasized that reclaiming power in 2028 depends heavily on a unified front and the strengthening of grassroots structures to win back the confidence of the electorate.
The campaign season has faced unique challenges and controversies. The campaign team of Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, a leading candidate for National Organiser, was involved in a road accident near Dambai while traveling to the northern regions; however, the team reported that morale remains high as all involved were treated and discharged. Simultaneously, the campaign for Chairman Wontumi has asserted that his current incarceration will not halt his bid for the national chairmanship, with his team planning to facilitate his nomination from prison. These events occur against a backdrop of "healing and rebuilding" advocacy led by figures like former Volta Regional Organiser Emmanuel Korsi Bodja, who maintains that the party must resolve internal divisions and adopt a voter-focused approach to be successful in the next general election.
Providing a broader perspective on the party’s direction, former President John Agyekum Kufuor recently addressed the 2026 Busia Institute Lecture in London, where he reminded members that electoral victory does not equate to ownership of the state. He urged for the protection of democratic institutions and the rule of law, a sentiment supported by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who emphasized that the party must prove its worth through effective public service rather than relying solely on historical legacies. As the NPP moves toward its national elections in October, the ability of the new executive guard to transition from internal competition to a cohesive national campaign will be the ultimate test of its readiness for 2028.
