The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially launched an online portal for members intending to contest the party's parliamentary primaries for the 2028 general elections. General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who announced the initiative, stated that prospective candidates are required to pay a non-refundable declaration fee of GH₵5,000. This digital window will be open from November 1 to November 10, 2026, marking an early step in the party's internal selection process.
The introduction of the online portal is intended to streamline the assessment of both incumbent Members of Parliament and first-time aspirants. According to party leadership, the process involves completing a digital application form and undergoing a vetting stage to ensure all candidates comply with the NPP's internal eligibility requirements and national electoral laws. This new system is expected to bring greater transparency and order to the declaration of interest phase.
In his announcement, Mr. Frimpong issued a stern warning against the commencement of premature campaign activities. He clarified that declaring interest through the portal does not equate to a formal nomination and reminded members that the party's ban on active campaigning remains in effect. Prospective aspirants are strictly prohibited from mounting billboards, organizing rallies, or engaging in public promotional activities during this period, as the party seeks to maintain unity and internal discipline.
Looking ahead, the NPP plans to hold a series of capacity-building workshops across all regions in December 2026. These sessions are designed to prepare successful applicants for the internal primary contests and the subsequent general elections. By initiating this process years in advance, the party aims to establish a clear roadmap for its 2028 parliamentary campaign and ensure that its candidates are well-prepared for the challenges of the national race.
