Bernard Owiredu Donkor, a private legal practitioner and a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, has officially declared his intention to contest the party's parliamentary primary in the Akwatia Constituency. The announcement was made during a Thanksgiving Service and Mini Conference held on November 1, 2026. Donkor is seeking the party's mandate to represent the constituency in the 2028 general elections, positioning himself as the candidate capable of winning back the seat for the NPP.
During the event, which doubled as a political rally, Donkor emphasized the strategic importance of the Akwatia seat. He noted that the constituency was previously an NPP stronghold and stressed the urgency of reclaiming it from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which won the seat in a prior by-election. Donkor argued that the party must avoid "experimenting" with unproven candidates and instead rally behind a contender with a demonstrated history of service and support for the party’s grassroots. He also pointed to his own past efforts in supporting previous NPP candidates as evidence of his commitment to the party's local success.
To formalize his candidacy, Donkor confirmed he would utilize the NPP’s newly established online portal for aspirant registration. He indicated his intention to complete this process before the November 10, 2026, deadline. Beyond the primary, the legal practitioner extended a bold challenge to the sitting NDC Member of Parliament, suggesting that for the sake of local development, the seat should be returned to the NPP. As the primary season approaches, Donkor’s entry adds a significant dynamic to the race in one of the Eastern Region's most closely watched constituencies.
