The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) have initiated discussions to establish a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry. During a consultative meeting held on October 20, 2026, leadership from both institutions explored collaborative frameworks designed to bridge the existing gap between academic research and industrial application within the energy sector.
The discussions were led by the NPA Chief Executive Officer, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, and the Dean of the University of Mines and Technology, Professor Richard Amorin. The proposed collaboration focuses on three primary pillars: the provision of student internships, the development of specialized training modules, and comprehensive capacity-building initiatives. By integrating UMaT’s academic rigor with the NPA’s regulatory oversight and industry experience, the partnership seeks to foster a more robust workforce capable of navigating the complexities of petroleum distribution and marketing.
Mr. Tameklo emphasized that academic collaboration is a vital component in driving innovation and technical advancements in petroleum practices. He noted that the NPA is committed to ensuring that the next generation of industry professionals is well-equipped with practical expertise. For UMaT, this partnership represents an opportunity to align its curriculum with current market demands, ensuring that graduates are ready to contribute immediately to the national economy. This move is expected to strengthen the overall technical expertise within the Ghanaian downstream sector, promoting safer and more efficient industry standards.
