Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has emphasized the necessity for African nations to develop home-grown solutions to the continent's aviation hurdles. Speaking during the launch of Uganda Airlines’ direct flight service from Entebbe to Accra, the Minister argued that stronger regional cooperation is the key to unlocking the economic potential of the African skies.
Mr. Nikpe highlighted the importance of these new air links in fostering economic integration and streamlining trade between West and East Africa. He noted that the direct route would significantly reduce travel time and costs, creating a more conducive environment for tourism and cross-border investment. The Minister praised the partnership as a practical example of how African carriers can collaborate to enhance connectivity across the continent.
In his address, the Minister also made a strong case for more affordable air travel, urging airline operators to lower fares to make flying accessible to a broader segment of the population. He pointed out that high costs remain a major barrier to the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and that making air travel a viable option for more people would accelerate regional development.
Finally, Mr. Nikpe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the revival of Ghana Airways. He stated that the effort to re-establish the national carrier is part of a strategic move to position Ghana as a primary aviation hub in the sub-region. By integrating a national airline into the growing network of African flight paths, the government aims to ensure long-term growth and stability for the country's transport sector.
