Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Western nations of using economic sanctions and exploitative debt conditions to hinder Africa's development and maintain external control over the continent. Speaking at the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, which was attended by representatives from 48 African countries, Putin warned that harsh financing terms offered by Western powers are pushing African nations into a "debt abyss." He argued that these practices are designed to prevent the continent from achieving true economic sovereignty and urged a transition toward a more equitable global financial system.
During his address, Putin emphasized Russia's commitment to supporting African development through practical cooperation rather than conditional aid. He highlighted Russia's role in global food security, noting that Moscow currently supplies grain and fertilizers to more than 40 African nations. The Russian leader also expressed strong support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), describing it as a vital mechanism for increasing intra-continental trade and reducing the region's reliance on external markets and Western-dominated financial structures.
Beyond economic criticism, Putin advocated for a significant reconfiguration of global governance to better reflect the continent's importance. He called for an increased role for African nations within major international financial institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. Putin asserted that the era of Western dominance is fading, replaced by a multipolar world where African voices must be heard more clearly in global decision-making processes.
The summit also served as a platform for discussing security and technological cooperation. While Russia pledged technological expertise to its partners, the meeting underscored the strategic shift of many African nations toward Moscow for trade and agricultural investments. Ghana was highlighted as a key partner in this reconfiguration of international relations, as several nations on the continent continue to diversify their global partnerships away from traditional Western alliances.
