The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has successfully restored power to Saasigli in the Yendi Municipality following the replacement of a faulty 200 kVA transformer. The community and its surrounding areas had been without electricity since mid-September when the previous unit failed. The replacement operation was completed on October 14, ending a month-long disruption for residents and local businesses.
The restoration process was significantly hampered by environmental and logistical challenges. NEDCo’s Corporate Communications Manager, Mr. Maxwell Kotoka, explained that heavy seasonal rainfall had severely deteriorated the road network leading to the community, making it difficult to transport the heavy replacement equipment to the site. In response, local residents collaborated with the utility company to manually improve road access, a community-led effort that eventually allowed the technical team to reach the installation point.
Following the successful installation, Mr. Kotoka issued a technical advisory to the public regarding donated electrical infrastructure. He urged individuals or organisations planning to donate transformers to communities to consult NEDCo before procurement to ensure all equipment meets the company's specific technical standards and safety requirements. Additionally, the Member of Parliament for Yendi, Mr. Abdul-Fatawu Alhassan, noted that the restoration is part of a broader push for regional development, with plans currently underway to extend electricity to more communities within the constituency by the end of October.
