The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is experiencing a period of intense internal activity and reorganization, marked by a significant surge in youth interest and a focus on grassroots empowerment. Osman Ayariga, the Deputy National Youth Organizer and CEO of the National Youth Authority, recently led a vetting team for constituency-level aspirants in the Central Region. Ayariga noted that the thousands of young Ghanaians seeking party positions demonstrate the NDC's growing appeal among the youth, a sentiment he echoed with the hashtag #YouthPower. This momentum is further evidenced in the Sunyani West constituency, where 77 aspirants have obtained nomination forms for executive roles, and national figures like Eric Obuaba have declared their intentions to contest for the party's National Executive positions.
As part of the party's drive for renewal, Akwasi Opong-Fosu, a candidate for the National Chairmanship, has introduced a strategic –3Vs– framework aimed at empowering the grassroots through –Votes, Voice, and Viability.– The proposal seeks to transform branches and constituencies into economically viable units by establishing a Business Development Directorate. This initiative aligns with the party's broader theme of –Restoration, Renewal, and Resetting,– focusing on providing members with training and local business opportunities that extend beyond the electoral cycle. Opong-Fosu’s plan emphasizes the importance of recognizing mobilization efforts and enhancing the role of grassroots members in the party's decision-making processes.
The party’s influence and organizational efforts also extend to its diaspora chapters, where strategic appointments and social projects are being prioritized. Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple, a Member of the Council of State, was recently appointed as the Patron of the Aldershot Branch of the NDC UK and Ireland Chapter. During a fundraising event, Kwamigah-Atokple donated $5,000 toward a potable water project in Ghana, urging the diaspora to leverage their expertise to attract investment and support President John Mahama’s –Reset Agenda– and 24-Hour Economy policy. He emphasized that access to clean water is a fundamental social need that the party must champion as part of its developmental mission.
Amidst these advancements, the party has also faced moments of reflection and mourning. In the Akatsi South constituency, all campaign-related activities have been suspended following the death of the Constituency Organiser, Mr. Sullemana Seidu, known as –Sulley.– Local leadership described Seidu as a dedicated organizer who contributed significantly to the party's grassroots strength since 2018. As the NDC continues its internal vetting and electoral processes across the country, leadership remains focused on maintaining decorum and unity, ensuring that the party is well-positioned to support President Mahama's administration and the ongoing national development goals.
