The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Greater Accra Regional Directorate has organized a "Civic Fest" to educate students from five junior high schools in the Ablekuma Central Municipality on environmental governance. Held in collaboration with the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly and the Member of Parliament for the area, Dan Latif, the event sought to equip the youth with the necessary knowledge and skills to take an active role in managing their local surroundings. The initiative highlights the Commission's strategy of using interactive platforms to foster civic responsibility from a young age.
The "Civic Fest" utilized various creative and competitive methods to capture the students' interest, including visual arts, quizzes, and theatrical performances. These activities were specifically tailored to address local environmental challenges, such as poor sanitation and inefficient waste management. By engaging in these exercises, the students were encouraged to brainstorm practical solutions and reflect on how their personal actions and community habits impact the environment.
During the event, the Municipal Chief Executive reminded participants that protecting the environment is not merely a choice but a constitutional obligation for every Ghanaian citizen. NCCE officials echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that education is the most effective tool for fostering long-term environmental responsibility among the youth. In response, the participating students pledged to become active agents of change, committing to lead sanitation efforts within their schools and residential areas.
To conclude the festival, participating students and their teachers were presented with certificates of participation and abridged versions of the 1992 Constitution. These awards were intended to reinforce their roles as civic ambassadors who are now better prepared to advocate for sustainable environmental practices. The program serves as a model for how the NCCE intends to use practical civic education to drive community-level environmental improvements across the Greater Accra Region.
