National Security personnel in the Ashanti Region have arrested 15 individuals for unauthorized sandwinning activities along the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project site. The operation, conducted in the Sewua–Donyina–Appiadu enclave, resulted in the impoundment of six tipper trucks, a wheel loader, and other heavy machinery. This intervention followed reports and viral social media footage showing the illegal excavation of white sand for commercial use within the construction zone. The suspects have been transported to Accra for further questioning as investigations continue to identify other collaborators involved in the illicit operation.
The Bosomtwe District Chief Executive, Ing. Abdullah Hamidu, confirmed the development and stated that the local assembly is taking decisive action to mitigate environmental damage. Following the arrests, an emergency meeting was held with community leaders to discuss strategies for protecting the expressway and the surrounding ecosystem from further degradation. The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has also been engaged to ensure the security of the infrastructure project, which is considered vital for national transportation.
Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Captain (Rtd) John Kwame Jabari, issued a stern warning to those involved in illegal sandwinning, emphasizing that disruptions to the expressway project will not be tolerated. He revealed that security teams had been monitoring the corridor for approximately two weeks following reports of clandestine sand-winning activities occurring at night. "Any activities that threaten to stall or damage this critical infrastructure will be met with the full force of the law," Jabari stated, affirming the government's commitment to completing the expressway without interference.
To prevent future occurrences, security surveillance has been significantly increased along the project route. REGSEC plans to maintain a constant presence in the area to deter illegal operators and safeguard the multi-million cedi investment. Authorities have urged residents and passersby to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities along the expressway corridor to help protect national assets and the environment.
