Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to sustain public trust by ensuring that its policy decisions directly improve the lives of Ghanaians. Speaking at the 2026 NDC Social Democracy Lab Policy Colloquium, the Vice President conducted a mid-term assessment of the administration’s performance during its first 18 months in office. She highlighted that since the inauguration of President John Mahama in January 2025, the government has focused on stabilizing the economy and laying the groundwork for sustainable growth.
The Vice President acknowledged significant improvements in key economic indicators, including a reduction in the inflation rate and the gradual stabilization of the Cedi. However, she emphasized that statistical successes must be matched by "quality decisions" that reflect the realities of the citizenry. This sentiment was echoed by the former Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Edward Doe Adjaho, who stressed that the ongoing economic recovery must result in tangible benefits for ordinary people to be considered truly successful.
National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, focused his remarks on the necessity of policy consistency to attract long-term investment. He argued that the government must maintain stable policy frameworks to build international investor confidence and secure Ghana’s developmental future. Mr. Asiedu Nketia also advocated for a closer working relationship between the NDC’s Social Democracy Lab and the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) to ensure the party’s governance strategies align with the broader national development agenda.
The 2026 colloquium serves as a critical platform for the NDC to review its governance track record and refine its strategy ahead of future electoral cycles. By bringing together party leadership, policy experts, and government officials, the event aims to bridge the gap between academic policy formulation and practical implementation. This year's gathering builds on the foundation of previous policy labs held in 2021, reinforcing the party’s commitment to evidence-based governance and social democratic principles.
