MTN Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have formalized a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bridging the divide between academic instruction and the corporate technology sector. The collaboration is designed to foster homegrown artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and local research capabilities, positioning the institution and the nation as leaders in regional technological development. By aligning educational outcomes with industry needs, the initiative seeks to create a more resilient and skilled workforce for Ghana’s digital economy.
Under the terms of the agreement, MTN Ghana will provide internship and practical training opportunities for KNUST students, offering them hands-on experience with emerging technologies in a real-world corporate environment. In exchange, KNUST will leverage its academic expertise and research infrastructure to help the telecommunications giant tackle complex technical challenges. This synergy between theoretical knowledge and industry application is expected to produce graduates who are immediately ready to contribute to the high-tech sector upon completion of their studies.
A significant focus of the partnership is the empowerment of female students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Through targeted mentorship and support programs, both organizations aim to address the gender gap in the technology industry. Furthermore, the emphasis on homegrown AI development is a move toward technological sovereignty, ensuring that the AI models and systems used in the country are developed locally with a deep understanding of the Ghanaian context and its unique socio-economic landscape.
The collaboration is also viewed as a critical step in mitigating the "brain drain" of Ghanaian tech talent by creating high-impact career pathways within the country. By establishing a robust ecosystem for innovation at the university level, MTN and KNUST are laying the groundwork for sustainable, industry-led research. This partnership reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that the next generation of Ghanaian engineers and researchers are equipped to lead the country’s ongoing digital transformation.
