Mohammed Abubakari, age 25, has made history by becoming the youngest-ever Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Amasaman Constituency. In an election held to determine the local leadership ahead of the 2028 general elections, Abubakari—popularly known as "Abu"—secured a decisive victory with 1,315 votes. His win signals a significant shift toward youthful leadership within the constituency as the party begins its strategic preparations for the next national political cycle.
The election results showed a clear preference for Abubakari among the delegates, who chose him over two more seasoned contenders. He outperformed his closest rivals, Kwami Julius Tsatsu, who received 794 votes, and William Afrako, who garnered 190 votes. Before this historic win, Abubakari served as the Assembly Member for the Onyansa Electoral Area, where he gained the grassroots experience and local visibility necessary to launch a successful bid for the constituency chairmanship. His transition from local assembly representation to high-level party leadership reflects a growing trend of youth participation in Ghana's political landscape.
In his victory speech, Abubakari emphasized a commitment to unifying the party's base and ensuring the NDC retains its constituency seat in the upcoming elections. He pledged to strengthen party structures and mobilize supporters well in advance of the 2028 polls. By bridging internal divides and fostering a spirit of collaboration among the rank and file, the new chairman aims to build a robust political machinery in Amasaman capable of delivering a victory for the party led by President John Mahama. His immediate priority will be to reconcile various factions and prepare the constituency for the challenges of the next electoral season.
