Land preparation has officially commenced for a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH). This significant infrastructure project, spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, is designed to replace the hospital's existing maternity unit, which has long been described as outdated and dilapidated. The development marks a critical step in the government's renewed focus on expanding and modernizing Ghana’s premier teaching hospital to meet the growing demands of maternal and neonatal care.
According to the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the new facility is not merely an expansion of bed capacity but a comprehensive upgrade of specialized services. The block is set to house state-of-the-art departments, including a specialized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), multiple surgical theatres, and an In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Centre. By integrating these advanced medical services, the project aims to provide a one-stop clinical solution for complex maternal and pediatric cases, significantly enhancing the quality of care available to families in the capital and beyond.
This project forms part of a broader sequence of investments in health infrastructure under the Mahama administration. It follows the recent commissioning of an upgraded Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at Korle Bu, which has already improved the facility’s capacity to handle cardiovascular emergencies. Beyond clinical care, the new Mother and Child Block is expected to serve as a hub for medical training and research, providing a modern environment for health professionals to hone their skills while addressing critical gaps in the country’s healthcare delivery system.
As land preparation progresses, the construction of this block represents a pivotal shift toward sustainable healthcare development in Ghana. By replacing the aging maternity infrastructure with a purpose-built facility, the government expects to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates significantly. The project underscores a commitment to ensuring that Korle Bu remains a center of excellence, capable of providing world-class medical services to all Ghanaians while bolstering the nation’s overall health security.
