President John Dramani Mahama officially welcomed the Global Mercy hospital ship at the Tema Port on October 1, 2026, marking the commencement of a comprehensive 10-month medical mission in Ghana. In partnership with the Ghanaian government, the international charity Mercy Ships will provide free, life-changing specialized surgeries and essential healthcare services to thousands of citizens. The vessel, which arrived in Ghana on August 18, signifies a major boost to the nation’s healthcare capacity, targeting complex medical needs that are often inaccessible to the vulnerable. This mission marks the organization's return to Ghana after 19 years, representing its fifth deployment to the country since 1991.
During previous missions, Mercy Ships has performed over 2,600 surgeries and 16,700 dental procedures in Ghana. The current 10-month stay is expected to build on this legacy by offering specialized interventions for various medical conditions while simultaneously working to enhance Ghana’s surgical and anesthetic systems. President Mahama expressed deep gratitude to the crew and local partners, highlighting the profound impact these missions have on the lives of patients and emphasizing the government's commitment to expanding healthcare access across the country.
Beyond the immediate surgical procedures, President Mahama stressed the importance of sustainability and professional development within the local health sector. Speaking aboard the Global Mercy, he called for structured collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the Mercy Ships team to ensure robust post-treatment care and follow-up for all patients. He specifically highlighted the mission as a unique opportunity for Ghanaian healthcare professionals to engage in knowledge exchange and learn from the ship's international medical team, which will help strengthen the national health workforce long after the ship departs.
To ensure the success of the mission, the President also called for the efficient management of patient movement and the streamlined handling of medical supplies. This collaborative effort is seen as a vital component of the government's broader agenda to improve health infrastructure and clinical expertise. As the mission unfolds at Tema Harbour, it is expected to provide a critical safety net for those requiring specialized care and leave a lasting legacy of improved surgical standards within the Ghanaian healthcare framework.
