President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana has formally applied to join the BRICS bloc, a strategic move intended to deepen South-South cooperation and expand the country's economic horizons. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony for newly appointed ambassadors, the President explained that the application is part of a broader effort to diversify development partnerships. The initiative seeks to open new avenues for trade, investment, and industrialization by aligning with the influential group of emerging economies.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ghana is initially seeking "Partner Country" status rather than immediate full membership. This phased approach is designed to allow the government to monitor the benefits of the partnership before committing to a more permanent role within the bloc. President Mahama emphasized that this diplomatic shift is rooted in Ghana’s national interest and the necessity of leveraging international relations for domestic growth. He instructed the new envoys to lead with integrity and ensure that these international ties translate into tangible development for the Ghanaian people.
While the move towards BRICS signals a pivot toward emerging global powers, Ghana intends to maintain its traditional economic alliances. President Mahama clarified that the nation remains committed to its existing obligations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. This dual approach is intended to provide Ghana with a more resilient economic foundation, balancing long-standing Western partnerships with new opportunities for cooperation among nations of the Global South.
