Work on the second phase of the Kumasi Central Market Redevelopment Project, popularly known as the Kejetia Market, is set to resume following a two-year hiatus. The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, confirmed that negotiations with contractors have concluded, clearing the way for machinery and personnel to return to the site within days. This development brings renewed hope to thousands of traders and residents in the Ashanti Region who have been impacted by the project’s stagnation since work halted at approximately 60% completion.
Financial arrangements to support the resumption have received official approval to ensure steady progress. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson has authorized the use of proceeds and funds from Phases One and Two to facilitate the return of contractors and provide the necessary backing to kickstart Phase Three. The government has emphasized that completing the remaining 40% of Phase Two is a critical priority before advancing fully to the next stage. Once construction activities are back in full swing, the government intends to reopen formal pricing discussions for Phase Three to finalize costs and timelines for the market's ultimate completion.
To prevent further delays, Minister Ayariga revealed that a dedicated committee has been established to monitor the project's progress and ensure that all milestones are met. He issued a clear warning that the government remains prepared to reassign contracts if the current contractors fail to demonstrate sufficient commitment to the agreed-upon schedule. This infrastructure drive is also being integrated into a broader national strategy, which includes the redesignation of the "24-Hour Economy Markets" initiative to "District Economy Markets" to ensure that modern market facilities benefit every district across the country.
Beyond the physical construction, the government is introducing structural changes to local governance to maximize the economic impact of these markets. Plans are underway to appoint Regional Economists who will collaborate with regional planners to bolster local economic strategies. Ayariga noted that comprehensive plans for nationwide market development will be a central feature of the upcoming 2027 budget. The completion of the Kejetia Market is viewed as a cornerstone for economic revitalization in Kumasi, aimed at creating sustainable jobs and improving the general welfare of the community.
