President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Alamein, Egypt, to participate in the Eighth African Union (AU) Mid-Year Coordination Summit and the inaugural Alamein Africa Forum. The high-level gathering brings together African heads of state, policymakers, and prominent business leaders, including Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote. The summit and forum are designed to foster deeper African economic integration and explore sustainable development opportunities, with a particular emphasis on creating resilient regional value chains that can withstand global shocks.
Delivering a keynote address titled "Investing in Health: Manufacturing and Regional Value Chains," President Mahama positioned the healthcare sector as a strategic economic powerhouse rather than merely a social service. He emphasized that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) offers a transformative opportunity for the pharmaceutical industry, allowing manufacturers to move beyond fragmented national markets to serve a unified continental market of 1.4 billion consumers. By leveraging this immense scale, the President argued that Africa can attract the necessary investment to boost local production and reduce the continent's heavy reliance on imported medicines.
To illustrate the potential of coordinated continental action, President Mahama cited the success of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) pooled tender initiative. This program, which aggregates demand across multiple member states, has already led to significant price reductions for essential health products while providing a stable market for African-based manufacturers. The President urged financial institutions and private investors to recognize the pharmaceutical sector as a viable and vital investment opportunity that is essential for both economic transformation and long-term health security across the continent.
In addition to his plenary contributions, President Mahama is engaging in a series of high-level bilateral discussions, most notably with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. These meetings are focused on enhancing trade relations between Ghana and Egypt and aligning strategies for the implementation of AfCFTA protocols. As the summit concludes, the discussions held in Alamein are expected to provide a roadmap for strengthening Africa’s manufacturing autonomy and accelerating the transition toward a more integrated and self-sufficient continental economy.
