President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Alamein, Egypt, to participate in the Eighth African Union (AU) Mid-Year Coordination Summit and the inaugural Alamein Africa Forum. This high-level gathering brings together African heads of state and business leaders to discuss critical pathways for the continent’s development. The President's visit underscores Ghana's commitment to regional cooperation and its active role in shaping the African Union's strategic direction during his current administration. A central feature of the President's itinerary is a keynote address at the Alamein Africa Forum entitled “Investing in Health: Manufacturing and Regional Value Chains.” In this speech, President Mahama is expected to highlight the health sector not just as a social service, but as a strategic economic driver capable of fostering regional value chains across the continent. This focus aligns with growing pan-African efforts to reduce dependency on imported medical supplies and strengthen domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities. The forum also features significant contributions from prominent figures, including Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and renowned Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote. Beyond the main forum sessions, President Mahama is scheduled to hold a crucial bilateral meeting with President el-Sisi. These discussions are slated to focus on deepening the relationship between Ghana and Egypt, with a specific emphasis on accelerating African economic integration and exploring sustainable development opportunities that benefit both nations and the wider sub-region. This diplomatic mission highlights the importance of the AU Mid-Year Summit as a platform for coordinating policy and economic strategy among member states. By championing health manufacturing and regional integration, President Mahama aims to position Ghana as a key player in the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) goals. The outcomes of these high-level engagements in Egypt are expected to influence future policy directions regarding health security and intra-African trade, setting the stage for more resilient continental economies.
