Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has issued a clarion call to African nations to strategically harness their vast natural resources, growing youthful population, and unique geographical position to improve the living standards of their citizens. Speaking at the Broadcasters Convention West Africa 2026, the former statesman emphasized that the continent’s wealth must be actively transformed from potential into tangible opportunities. He argued that the mere possession of resources is insufficient unless it translates into the empowerment and dignity of the African people.
Highlighting the continent’s immense industrial potential, Kufuor pointed out that Africa currently holds 30% of the world’s mineral reserves and 65% of the planet's remaining arable land. These assets, he noted, provide a solid foundation for sustainable development and food security. Furthermore, he highlighted Africa’s strategic geographical location as a significant advantage for global trade, urging leaders to leverage these positions to gain better access to international markets and foster regional economic integration.
A central theme of the former President's address was the role of the youth, who are projected to constitute one-quarter of the global population by the year 2050. Kufuor stressed that this demographic shift presents both a challenge and an unprecedented opportunity. To avoid a crisis and instead reap a demographic dividend, he urged immediate and substantial investment in education and technical skills. Empowering the youth, he asserted, is the most critical factor for ensuring long-term economic growth and social stability across the continent.
In his concluding remarks, Kufuor advocated for the responsible and transparent development of natural resources, ensuring that the benefits are widely shared. He maintained that the ultimate measure of Africa’s progress should not be found in macroeconomic figures alone, but in the ability of its citizens to live with dignity and participate meaningfully in the governance and economic life of their nations. By prioritizing citizen empowerment, Kufuor believes Africa can finally transition from a continent of potential to one of realized prosperity.
