The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MTN Ghana to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) talent development and bridge the gap between academic training and industry requirements. This collaboration aims to provide students with direct exposure to the telecommunications sector through internships and participation in real-world AI projects. By aligning educational outcomes with market needs, the partnership seeks to equip graduates with the practical skills required to address Ghana's specific technological challenges.
A core component of the agreement includes the introduction of scholarships for the university's top-performing Computer Science graduates. During the signing ceremony, KNUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Christian Agyare emphasized the university's dedication to building strong industry relationships that benefit student career prospects. The scholarship program will place a particular emphasis on supporting women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, aiming to increase diversity within Ghana's high-tech workforce.
Representing MTN Ghana, Kwame Adu Manu highlighted that the initiative is strategically designed to combat "brain drain" by encouraging highly skilled graduates to remain and work within the country. By involving students in industry-led AI research and development early in their careers, the program demonstrates the potential for fulfilling professional growth within the local economy. This focus on domestic talent retention is seen as vital for the sustainable growth of Ghana's digital infrastructure.
This partnership between KNUST and MTN Ghana reflects a broader trend toward integrated industry-academia cooperation in West Africa. As artificial intelligence becomes a central pillar of global economic development, such agreements ensure that Ghanaian educational institutions remain at the forefront of innovation. The collaboration is expected to produce a steady pipeline of AI-ready professionals capable of driving transformation across various sectors of the Ghanaian economy.
