The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly (ASEMA) has issued a final notice to traders operating at the Kasoa New Market, ordering them to immediately vacate road spaces, pavements, and buffer zones. This directive comes as the Assembly seeks to address severe traffic congestion and escalating safety concerns that have been exacerbated by ongoing construction projects in the area. Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Seth Sabah Serwornoo-Banini emphasized that the encroachment of traders onto unauthorized public spaces has created a bottleneck for both vehicles and pedestrians, particularly during busy market days.
According to the Assembly, the decision to clear the pavements was not made in isolation but followed extensive engagement with the trading community. MCE Serwornoo-Banini noted that a grace period had been provided to allow traders to relocate voluntarily, demonstrating the local government's intent to restore public order without unnecessarily endangering the livelihoods of the vendors. However, the persistent blockage of the lorry park and pedestrian walkways has reached a point where the Assembly can no longer delay enforcement to ensure the smooth flow of commerce and traffic.
Beyond immediate enforcement, the Assembly is also focusing on long-term infrastructure solutions to alleviate the chronic pressure on Kasoa’s road network. Plans are underway for the construction of a new bypass, which aims to divert traffic away from the most congested parts of the market district. The MCE stressed that these infrastructure improvements, combined with the restoration of pedestrian safety, are essential for the sustainable development of the municipality. Traders are urged to comply with the directive to avoid further disruption as the Assembly moves forward with its urban renewal and traffic management strategies.
