Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, has called on the Ministry of Transport to deploy additional Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses to his constituency. The request is aimed at alleviating the high transportation costs and logistical challenges faced by residents who commute daily. Shaib emphasized that the introduction of more state-run buses is essential to provide affordable alternatives for his constituents.
The MP specifically requested that the ministry allocate between four and six additional buses to serve the Weija-Gbawe area. He noted that many residents currently rely on multiple private commercial vehicles to reach their destinations, a situation that significantly increases their daily travel expenses. By increasing the presence of Metro Mass Transit, which offers lower fares than private operators, the MP hopes to provide immediate financial relief to families and workers in the district.
This appeal coincides with recent traffic management changes on the Kasoa-Accra road, including the implementation of a new contraflow system designed to reduce peak-hour congestion. While Shaib acknowledged that the contraflow measure could improve travel times, he stressed that road safety must remain the top priority for the authorities overseeing the project. He argued that enhancing mass transit capacity is a necessary step to complement traffic management efforts and ensure a more efficient transport network.
Providing more buses is seen as a vital intervention for the growing population in Weija-Gbawe, where transport infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with residential expansion. The Ministry of Transport is expected to review the proposal, which if implemented, could reduce waiting times at terminals and lower the overall cost of living for residents by streamlining their daily commute into the capital.
