Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, has called on the Ministry of Transport to urgently deploy Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses to his constituency. The appeal is centered on the need to provide more affordable transportation options for residents who are currently facing high daily commuting costs. Shaib highlighted that the lack of direct, large-capacity public transport forces many constituents to use several different vehicles to reach their destinations, creating a significant financial burden for families in the area.
The MP specifically requested the allocation of four to six additional buses to serve the Weija-Gbawe corridor. He noted that the introduction of MMT services would offer a cheaper alternative to the private commercial vehicles that currently dominate the route. According to Shaib, this intervention is necessary to ease the economic pressure on local workers and students who rely on public transport for their daily activities, especially as living costs continue to rise.
In his address, Shaib also touched upon recent infrastructure developments, including the new contraflow measures implemented on the Kasoa-Accra road. While he acknowledged that these measures have helped to reduce traffic congestion during peak hours, he emphasized that they are not a complete solution. He argued that improved traffic flow must be matched with efficient public transport services and a renewed focus on road safety to protect the lives of commuters and pedestrians navigating the busy highway.
The request reflects a broader concern over transport accessibility in the rapidly growing residential areas on the outskirts of Accra. By seeking direct government intervention through the Metro Mass Transit system, Shaib aims to ensure that his constituents benefit from more reliable and cost-effective travel. The Ministry of Transport's potential response to this request remains a high priority for the Weija-Gbawe community as they seek sustainable solutions to their daily transportation challenges.
