The Ghana Police Service has intensified its crackdown on organized crime, dismantling several high-profile robbery syndicates across the country between August and September 2026. These intelligence-led operations have resulted in numerous arrests, the deaths of suspects during shootouts, and the recovery of significant caches of illegal firearms, including multiple AK-47 rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno recently underscored the impact of these operations by confronting several handcuffed suspects with surveillance footage of their alleged crimes during a national press briefing at the Police Headquarters.
In the Ashanti and Western regions, police successfully broke up a violent gang that specifically targeted gold dealers and mining sites. The operations, which concluded in early September 2026, led to the arrest of five suspects, including Clinton Mawuli and Richmond Mensah, while one suspect, Seidu Salifu, died during the encounter. In Accra, authorities foiled a sophisticated syndicate that had been monitoring bank customers in Labone, Tema, and Achimota since April 2026. A police intervention on August 13 resulted in the deaths of two suspects and the arrest of Augustine Okechuku Maazi, who was found in possession of firearms and multiple stolen vehicle registration plates used to evade detection.
Further successes were recorded on the Accra-Kumasi N6 highway, where police apprehended a gang leader known as Obotan and four others, including a 14-year-old lookout. In a notable development, the gang leader's mother, Isaka Nafse, was also arrested for allegedly concealing a weapon used in the highway robberies. These arrests were complemented by the discovery of an AK-47 rifle buried in farmland by suspects attempting to hide evidence. The police have since deployed special teams to high-risk mining and commercial areas to maintain security and prevent retaliatory attacks as they pursue remaining members of these criminal networks.
To boost morale and encourage continued professionalism, the Upper West Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing, recently honored and promoted four police officers for their bravery in disrupting a robbery syndicate in early August. The Minister emphasized that such dedication is essential for fostering public trust and strengthening the collaboration between security agencies and local communities. As the Ghana Police Service continues its investigations, the use of advanced surveillance and intelligence-gathering remains a central pillar of their strategy to ensure national stability under the current administration.
